The Blue Door

I walk through the door, locking it behind me

Knowing I will return, back through that blue door.

But you walked out to awaiting Ambulance

With grace, poise, courage, and clam,

Oxygen tank in toe and never looked back

Knowing you will never grace the step of your home again.

You sat and watched the world go by

Observing every detail, every movement, every moment.

You smiled and beckoned your loved ones to come and sit by you.

And when your day was done and the race was run

You called it and slid gracefully into the neverness.

I walked back through the blue door

Back to an empty cavern that was and is our home

Amazed at how one person can fill a space with life.

Once gone what was warm is now cold,

What was full is now echoingly empty.

My life was like my home, you filled it,

And in parting you emptied it.

I cannot fathom what those last days were like

As you sat and watched our lives play out

Knowing yours was slowly ebbing away.

You will stay with me until all life drains from my being,

When I too will pass through that door never to grace its step again.
